The nurse coordinator has an expanded role within an assigned specialty, and is responsible for the coordination and overall function of his/her surgical specialty to maintain high standards and quality services in the surgery department. The Coordinator RN team leader is responsible for the coordination and communication of information relevant to the intra-operative patient care process in their assigned specialty. The Coordinator RN provides the Charge RN with feedback regarding specific needs for the efficiency of their specialty. The Coordinator also helps maintain physician, patient and staff satisfaction in the particular specialty. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:The Coordinator Surgical Nurse:1. Demonstrates knowledge and application of the Intra-operative nursing process for patients of all ages, assigned to his / her assigned specialty.2. Monitors and recognizes changes in the patient's behavioral and physiological status, during pre-intra and post operative phases of the procedure; takes appropriate action based on assessment.3. Utilizes professional skills and judgment in delivering and/or delegating care for the surgical patients assigned to his/her specialty.4. Assumes responsibility for the assigned specialty, and provides leadership and direction to the other members of the healthcare team assigned to the case.5. Maintains responsibility for eliciting specific surgeon's needs/preferences, for their specialty, and communicating them to the OR Director in a timely manner.6. Maintains responsibility for effective, prompt communication with OR Director regarding needs, concerns within his/her assigned specialty.7. Coordinates the preparation for the surgical cases; assuring that all supplies, instruments, and equipment will be available to perform the surgical procedure.8. Maintains responsibility for the sterility of the procedure by monitoring the sterility of the sterile field.9. Assist with proper positioning of the surgical patient by making sure that the correct padding and positioning devices are used correctly and in accordance to the patient's size and surgical procedure.10. Demonstrates ability to operate surgical equipment in an efficient and safe manner.11. Maintains responsibility for adherence to the department's and facility's policies and procedures.12. Demonstrates knowledge and adherence to AORN and JCAHO standards.13. Demonstrates effective communication skills when interacting with all internal and external customers.14.
